Upon your arrival
Airport
Getting to Kona. The main airport you want to fly into is KOA (Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport). This airport is located approximately 15 miles north of our condo. It is approximately a 25-30 minute drive from the airport depending on traffic. It is a very quaint open-air airport. It has not changed much since I have been coming to the islands over 35 years ago. You can get direct flights to KOA or go through connecting flights in Maui and Oahu mainly. The connecting flights are only about a 30-45 minute flight. From California, we like both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaskan Airlines, but you can check prices on “Google Flights” to see what is competitive.
Rental Car
There are several rental car agencies at KOA. You catch a shuttle in front of baggage claim. Each rental agency has their own appropriate shuttle. The rental agencies are less than a 5 minute drive to the airport. We have rented from several different agencies. We normally find that Discount Hawaii Car Rental has the best choices (see link below). This site allows you to look at most of the national agencies and price compare them. Once you decide on a rental and price, you can book with them. They reserve your car with no fee or credit card required. The reservation is directly with the agency so you just show up to the respective car rental place and show them your reservation and pay them directly. We would suggest getting your rental car reservation early, as prices can go up in high demand seasons. We also recommend checking in periodically on prices as your trip nears… to see if they go down! Costco car rental may be a bit cheaper if you have a Costco membership. We have also found that American Express has a good premium rental car insurance program for a flat fee per year and each time you rent. You may want to check out the link below if you have an Amex card.
check-in
CHECK-IN IS ANY TIME AFTER 4PM. The complex address, your unit number and front door code will be automatically EMAILED to you within 24 yours of your check-in date. IF FOR ANY REASON YOU DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR CHECK-IN FRONT DOOR CODE 24 HOURS BEFORE YOUR CHECK-IN DATE PLEASE TEXT OR CALL ME IMMEDIATELY AT 805-391-3100.
Getting to the condo
You can easily google map the location for directions. If you have any problems mapping, please let me know. Traffic can sometimes get congested as they are typically doing a lot of construction along the roads. There is a Costco between the Airport and the condo as well as a Walmart to stock up on food and supplies.
Once you arrive
Once at the condo complex, you are welcome to park in the complex parking lot. There are no assigned parking spaces. The complex allows for one space per unit. Parking is normally not a problem. There are two condo complex buildings. The older unit is the one closest to the pool. We are the newer unit to your right as you enter the parking lot. The newer unit has an elevator, which you will appreciate after a few days. There are also two sets of stairs you can take. Your unit number and Front door code will be automatically emailed to you approximately 24 hours before your check-in.
keys
THERE IS NO PHYSICAL KEY FOR THE FRONT DOOR. There is an electronic dead bolt lock on the front door. Your electronic key code will be emailed to you with your check-in instructions about 24 hours prior to arrival. To unlock the front door please punch in your key code and then wait about 5 seconds. You will hear the lock motor unlocking the door. Please wait till the motor stops before trying to enter the condo. The lock needs about 5 seconds to activate the deadbolt. You will hear a motor sound as the dead bold locks and unlocks the door. Please do not check in prior to 4pm.
Once inside the condo you can lock and unlock the front door as any normal deadbolt by manually turning the dead bold lever from inside the condo.
To lock the condo when leaving, simple shut the door and FROM THE OUTSIDE and hit the top button with the picture of a lock on it. Once you hit this button the deadbolt motor will activate and lock the door. Once you hear the motor stop you can check to make sure the door is locked. Please lock the condo at all times when not present.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOCK THE LOWER ENTRY HANDLE. This lower entry handle has been disabled and should not lock. Please do not try and lock the lower entry handle as there is no key for it. If you manage to lock this lower entry handle you will be locked out of the condo.
Your code will only be good for the dates you are staying with us. If you fail to enter the correct code three times in a row the lock will automatically be disabled.... the lock will blink red and make a beeping sound for about 10-15 seconds. If this occurs please wait 2-3 minutes for the lock to reset and try your code again. If for some reason you forget your code or your code is not working please give Britt a call to get an emergency code. You can also try calling or texting me as well.
ABOUT THE CONDO
When you arrive, you may want to open some doors and windows and let the wonderful ocean breeze in. You get a wonderful ocean breeze through our condo and it keeps it pleasant. Remember you are in a tropical paradise and there are mosquitos and other small critters in Hawaii. Although the complex does a good job on landscaping, they cannot be absolutely avoided. So, you may want to keep an eye on the doors that do not have screens, to avoid letting any mosquitos, gecko’s, beetles or even birds in. Please close all doors/sliders when not in the condo. There will be check-out procedures for you in the condo. The closets will have chairs, umbrellas and beach amenities. If there is something you need and don’t see it there, please reach out to Britt as we may have extras somewhere else. PLEASE do not smoke in the condo or anywhere on the Lanai or outside the condo in the stairwell. The condo is completely a non-smoking property. If anything is not working or not to your liking please reach out to Britt. Britt’s contact info will be given to you with your Condo code and will be in the Condo information binder on the kitchen counter top. If Britt cannot respond in a reasonable amount of time, please reach out to me on my cell phone. My personal cell phone is 805-391-3100 (Chad). We want to ensure your stay is just perfect and you have everything you need.
ABOUT THE POOL
There is a pool gate key in the condo. You will need a key to get into pool area as well as letting yourself out of the pool area when you leave. The pool gate locks behind you so please do not lock yourself in without a key. The lounge chairs, tables and BBQ are for your use.
